Grow your own alum crystal
In your bag you have a crystal “seed”, a piece of string, a coffee filter and some “food” (alum crystals).
When you feed it a solution of crystal juice it will grow into a crystal that will fit in the palm of your hand.
But it takes a long time to grow a crystal.
At least two months.
And you have to feed your crystal once a week.
Here is a video of grown ups who made their own crystal just like you will.
You will need:
- two glasses
- a piece of tape
Fun fact: You can make crystals out of all kinds of household materials by way of essentially the same process. Sugar, salt, epsom salt and borax are some relatively common ones. If you’re curious to see some samples and learn more about crystals checkout this Interesting Engineering article. Every substance forms a different crystalized shape!
A pipe cleaner in the shape of a snowflake can make a fun borax crystal.
We have a few on our Christmas tree from over the years.
These beauties were made by Little Bins for Little Hands.
Here’s how Martha does it.
The trick to growing crystals is finding somewhere stable and warm where your glasses can rest undisturbed and cozy. And feeding them if you want them to be big 🙂
Enjoy 🙂
