Lead Teacher | Founder | Director | Dreamer
Our staff currently consists of an incredible teacher who adores playing outside with kids. Me!
I genuinely love children. It is my role as their instructor to ensure I am lovingly meeting them exactly where they are at. Whether I am watching or listening to their play or helping them put back on that mitten that is just a little bit too tricky it is my job to be their guidepost toward a strong a capable sense of self.
Nearly a decade ago I read a magazine article about a nursery school in Norway where the children did not go indoors at all. They rode a bus from the city to the forest with their teachers, backpacks loaded to the max, where they spent their entire day in the woods. This was amazing to me and I immediately wanted to do it here. Shortly there after I worked as a nanny for almost 3 years caring for 6 children after school where I made it my mission for us not to set foot indoors. We had quite the set of adventures and I quickly learned about how magical it was to set kids free in wild outdoor space.
How many of us grew up knowing that freedom?
My guess is more than a few of you. How many kids these days do you think get to experience that same freedom? In today’s fast pace lifestyle, with it’s structured activities and fear of the unknown few kids get to play unsupervised in their own neighbourhood playgrounds much less our cities nature parks.
Now I won’t set your kids free into the park unsupervised but I will come as close as I can!
My joy as a teacher comes from sharing the little seeds of learning I have with children at just the right moment. Rather than forcing a curriculum of set games and activities upon them I like to keep my wheelhouse of ideas close at hand, ready to share when it happens upon them. I’m also SUPER passionate about stuff like stewardship and seeds. I’ve heard that enthusiasm is contagious and tends to rub off.
My qualifications include:
- Licensed ECEA (Early Childhood Education – Assistant)
- St.John’s Wilderness First Aid and CPR level 3
- NCCP Community Sport Coach
- Wilderness Awareness Mentor (Summer 2017)
- Forest School Practitioner Level 1 (Winter 2017)
- Parent to a 13, 11 and 3.5 year old who are all really amazing kids (ask their teachers!)
I’m a geek about child development and am always reading books about how our bodies, brains and hearts are growing. This stuff is super important to me and I always am learning, growing my skills and reflecting so that I can be the best parent and teacher I can be.
