Let your child discover all that their amazing body can do!
A preschool age child is at the perfect age to explore and deeply appreciate all that the outdoors has to offer. Whether they are discovering the properties of mud in an outdoor mud kitchen or creating games in a tree stump getting dirty, climbing rocks, and finding their way safely and happily through the forest this is all part of an outdoor adventure experience. They discover exactly all of the wonderful things they are capable of as they explore, climb, run, jump and crawl through the forest.

After a day outdoors your child’s eyes will sparkle
as they tell you about all of the things they did.

A typical day in preschool….

  • Drop-off/Pack Check – We meet in the parking lot where the group leader and the parents will go through a clothing checklist to ensure each child is properly prepared for the adventure ahead.
  • Hike – Our day begins with a small hike to one of four play sites. Each site takes us deeper into the park and we return to each place for only 3 weeks each season to ensure our environment has a chance to rest & recover.
  • Circle/Story – We begin our day together by taking off our packs and settling in for a story and songs
  • Play – The bulk of our time is spent on play. Teachers are very hands off to allow children to learn, explore and play freely & deeply with each other. We are always nearby and attentive to lend a helping hand or suggestions of language as they learn to communicate with each other.
  • Snack – Snack brings the group back together where they are each given a warm cloth to wipe their hands, after a blessing song a snack is shared together. Children bring a litter-free snack to fuel their busy bodies
  • Explore/Wander/Hike – When everyone has had a drink of water or warm tea and a full belly backpacks go back on for a joyful hike back through the park to return to the parking lot for pick up. Everyone carries all their things in their pack, including the teacher!
  • Pick Up – We wait at the yellow gate!

School Age Camp

Outdoor Adventure Summer Day Camp

Camps for school age children 6-9

Peterson Creek Park, Kamloops BC

DUE TO THE UNPRECEDENTED FIRE SEASON & PARK CLOSURES THIS CAMP HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR SUMMER 2017

Join us for a fun filled week of adventure and physical activity in the great outdoors.
Loosely structured, full of free play and lots of creative games, stories and songs.
We will definitely be doing some hiking. There will be lots of encouragement for observation as well as identification of native plants & animals. Kids will have the opportunity to learn skills such as knot tying, map reading (and making!) as well as shelter building. All focused around a theme of stewardship for our nature park and our community!

Don’t miss out on this incredible one of a kind day camp experience!

PROGRAM DETAILS:

DROP OFF AT 8:30AM

We meet at the Lower Park Entrance to Peterson Creek. At the top of Glenfair Drive off of Columbia St downtown. If you are coming from East of 6th you can access Glenfair by turning right at 5th and coming toward the Glenfair retirement residences and turning right to go over the bridge and up left toward the park.

Your child MUST come to camp EACH day with the following on their body:

  • A well fitting backpack
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Long pants & shirt (NO SHORTS – NO TANK TOPS)
  • Rain coat & Pants (these can be in their backpack)

In their backpack each child MUST have:

  • two pairs of socks
  • a change of clothes in a ziploc bag
  • two bread bags
  • a water bottle
  • a snack AND a lunch

Kids who not well dressed are uncomfortable and get cranky REALLY fast when they are working hard outside. I do my best to keep kids cool and comfortable but if your child comes unprepared and becomes overheated I will call you to pick them up likely because they are in distress.

It is of UTMOST importance that we set them up for success by dressing appropriately.

OUR DAY

Our first session will be pretty low key. We will go for a short walk into the park and play some games while we get to know each other.

Our typical day will include:

  • A 30-60min leisurely hike into the park
  • Together we will build our “basecamp” for the day
  • Snack
  • Free play and nature arts & crafts
  • Lunch
  • Story-telling games
  • “Sit Spot”
  • Hike/Meander back down to meet our parents

PICK UP IS AT 3PM

We wait at the yellow gate.
I do not let children run into the parking lot toward you. Please come up to the yellow gate to join us and do not wait in your car for your child. The parking lot is one of the most dangerous places we will be all day and I want your kids to be safe.

An opportunity for parents to learn how (and why) we do what we do!
Our Oak & Acorn program is our opportunity to share with you ways to foster a deep connection to the natural world for both you and your children. In this mentoring program we discuss how we are role models for the children in our lives and discover ways we can share our love for the natural world with our children. Together we will share celebrations of children’s growth and development and you’ll get to hear all about how geeked we (as child education professionals) get about what kids learn about themselves from consistent long-term exposure to the outdoors.

We integrate parents and siblings into the experience,
with opening and closing circles, storytelling, crafts, observations and even celebrations!

Toddler Outdoors KamloopsTogether we will share:

  • Storytelling and songs
  • Nature Mentoring discussions
  • Ways to deepen your connection to nature everyday
  • Adventures, meanders and wanders of discovery and inquiry
  • Plant identification & observation (edible, medicinal, hazardous!)
  • Stewardship and learning to tread lightly
  • Nature crafts
  • Basic wilderness skills (as desired by the group – shelters, knots, clothing, whistles, orienteering etc.)
  • Much more!
